On July 15, 2026, a major amendment to the Slovak Act on Residence of Foreigners takes effect. This update heavily impacts employee relocation, foreign entrepreneurs, and expats living in Slovakia. Discover the key changes below to ensure your application remains compliant and avoid immediate rejection by the Foreign Police.
Key Changes Effective from July 15, 2026:
- Zero Tolerance for Incomplete Applications: If your application for a temporary residence permit or a national visa is missing a valid passport or any required attachment, the Foreign Police or embassy will reject it immediately. They will only provide written information stating which documents are missing.
- Strict Financial Checks for Entrepreneurs: Tax and insurance arrears will now be verified across all corporate entities where the foreigner acts as an executive or statutory representative. Having debts is now a direct ground for residence cancellation.
- New Rules After Loss of Employment: The grace period to secure a new job ranges from 3 to 6 months, depending on the duration of your previous residence. You must report your unemployment to the Foreign Police within 7 working days.
- Slovak Language Exam for Long-Term Residence: To qualify for long-term residence, applicants must now pass an official Slovak language examination at a state language school or a public university.
- Business Allowed During Studies: Expats holding a temporary residence for the purpose of study are now legally allowed to run a business in Slovakia.
- Citizenship by Descent: The residence requirements are now simplified for descendants of former Czechoslovak citizens who were born in Slovakia.
Longer Residence Permits for Business
On a positive note, the Foreign Police will now grant temporary residence permits for the purpose of business for a straight duration of three years.
